BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS

Back to school brings new experiences, friends, teachers, classrooms and STRESS. So it’s natural for children and parents to be apprehensive about returning to school. Here are 3 tips to help ease the transition for ALL.

1. Prepare and plan ahead of time-Make a list of items needed for back to school: classroom supplies, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, etc, and purchase ahead of time.

2. Plan bedtime and wake-up routine in advance-Start a bedtime routine two weeks prior to the start of school. Easing kids back to bed early will make mornings easier for everyone. Aim for a minimum 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

3.Check in Regularly-Ask your children how they’re feeling about going back to school. Feelings don’t need fixing; try to focus on listening and empathizing. If they are feeling anxious, try offering some coping strategies they can use, such as deep breathing exercises, squeezing something like a stress ball or listening to music.

SELF-CARE TIPS

Self-care isn’t selfish. We may hear this all the time, and see it talked about everywhere, including our social media feed. But what does that look like on a daily basis?

It may be taking ONE DEEP BREATH and it may mean actually doing the hard thing. Self-care runs the gamut of bubble bath and beauty products to making a phone call to the doctor to check out that symptom you’ve been ignoring, but secretly worrying about.

What we call Radical Self-Care is the latter. Doing the hard thing. But, as Glennon Doyle says, “We can do hard things”. So, today, choose ONE thing you’re going to do - just for YOU! Take that bubble bath, get the pedicure? Do the budget? Have a boundary setting conversation? Remember, when on the airplane, we are told to put our oxygen masks on first. So, what is the one thing you’ll do for yourself today?

TIPS ON EATING FOR FOR ENERGY

Eating for energy can be confusing. Eat eggs, don’t eat eggs. Eat red meat, wait, don’t eat red meat. There are millions of articles and books on what to eat and what not to eat. Here’s how we help clients decide what foods give them the most energy. We call it the 4-day energy experiment. Over a period of 4 days, make a journal for your food. Try meals with animal, plant or no protein and then make notes as to how you feel.

One other tip on eating for energy is to start to read ingredients, not calories. So, when we’re shopping, we aren’t looking at the calories or fat content, we’re watching the ingredient label and on the lookout for sugar, and/or alternative sweeteners. Did you know that some alternative sweeteners have been linked to cancer? Always read your labels.
